The Made-to-Order Model Service
The Made-to-Order Model is a service offered by SMC Laboratories to support clients that are in need of a certain disease model that is not yet available on the market or not part of our current model catalog. For either of the 2 cases, we thoroughly discuss the client’s needs, wishes and expectations regarding the model, the treatment regimen, and all other details regarding the establishment and conduction of their pharmacological efficacy study.
SMC Laboratories has been offering this special Made-to-Order Model service for several years already and through our deep knowledge and know-how in the fields of inflammatory and fibrotic disease models as well as cancer models, we could demonstrate a >80% success rate with establishing new models. Therefore, we are confident that we can support your Made-to-Order project as well and look forward to your inquiry.
The Workflow for the Made-to-Order Model
When we receive a new inquiry from a prospective client about a model that is not in our catalog, we follow a proven workflow to ensure a possibly smooth conduction and successful establishment in the first instance. Below we will walk you through the steps of our workflow so that you know exactly what happens at which time point.
The Made-to-Order Model is divided into 5 project phases, which will be explained in more detail below.
Project Phase 0: Client Inquiry
The first step is of course the initiation by sending us an inquiry and telling us about the disease model and readouts you are looking for. (You can do so, by using the “contact us” button below.)
Project Phase 1: Discussion of Needs
We usually suggest an online meeting to start the discussion of your project and which model you have in mind. But even if you do not have a clear understanding yet of the model you want to use, we are here to support you in the process of finding the right model for your project.
We understand that you might be hesitant to share information about your project with us, when sensitive data are involved, but rest assured, we are always ready to sign an NDA / CDA with you, if necessary, before discussing any details.
Project Phase 2: Literature Research and Study Plan
After hearing about your ideas and needs for the model and study you would like to conduct, we deep dive into literature research and check if there are any publications on feasible models. This is a collaborative project phase, so if you have found any publications already that further explain your dream model, we are always grateful if you could share them with us.
Based on the results of the literature research, we will propose a model and study plan for the pilot study in the next step. This proposal is then usually further discussed in another online meeting.
When we reached the end of this phase and you are happy with the study design, you give the “go” by signing a Purchase Order.
Project Phase 3: New Model Establishment in Pilot Study
After receiving the signed PO, we get to the hands-on part of the project, order the mice, establish the model and analyze the results. After obtaining the results from the pilot study, we will discuss the outcome with you and how to proceed from here. This includes the study design and time line for the following main study.
Project Phase 4: Conduction of Pharmacological Efficacy Study
After successfully establishing the model in Project Phase 3, we then move on together to Project Phase 4 and thoroughly evaluate the pharmacological efficacy of your compound.
If applicable, we can also include the treatment group with the SOC drug, to compare the efficacies of your drug against the SOC to obtain solid data for the IND filing following after the preclinical phase of drug development.
Flexibility in the Workflow and Study Plan of the Made-to-Order Model
Since this is your project, you get to choose, if you want to run a treatment group in phase 3 already, or if you would like to obtain validation data on a smaller number of animals first, before moving on to the main study to evaluate the pharmacological efficacy of your drug candidate.
