SDGs

Development goals addressed by SMC Laboratories

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, are 17 global goals to be achieved by 2030.
Of the 17 goals, Goals 3 and 9 are the most important goals directly linked to the business of SMC Laboratories, Inc.
We are contributing to the achievement of the SDGs, centering on the two goals that form the basis of our business activities.

Goal 3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

We are contributing to the development of innovative new drugs aimed at treating diseases with high unmet medical needs. By providing non-pharmacological studies using the STAM™ model, a steatohepatitis (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis(MASH,f.k.a. NASH) mouse model, and pathological model mice with high clinical correlation, we accelerate the development process of new drugs. We aim to help deliver new medicines to patients as soon as possible.

Goal 9 INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

We are engaged in research and development of a non-clinical pharmacological evaluation study system for the creation of new drugs for diseases with high unmet medical needs. In particular, we are actively investing in research and development in the fields of liver and lung diseases.
We have acquired new data such as biomarkers, which are attracting clinical attention, to the STAM™ model, which is a globally recognized MASH/NASH model, and are proceeding with further development as a model with high clinical correlation. Together with NASH, in addition to the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis model that we have been focusing on so far, we will develop a model mouse for pneumonia, which has a growing need for development due to the current situation (COVID-19 pandemic). We are developing a model that induces pathological conditions such as viral pneumonia and subsequent fibrosis, by a clinically relevant mechanism.

Goal 4 QUALITY EDUCATION

We aim to develop a diverse workforce, and through qualification allowances and training systems, we support the improvement of employees' qualities and abilities.
Specifically, we hire a wide range of personnel from overseas, support language skills to develop staff international communication, support training for researchers who need specialized skills, grant various qualification allowances, and more. In addition, with the aim of acquiring a wide range of knowledge, we are conducting and promoting participation in domestic and overseas academic conferences and overseas training for affiliated companies.

Goal 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

We are actively engaged in job creation and are continuing to hire new graduates and mid-career hires. We will support the growth of the Japanese economy by expanding our business as a company.
